At the start, I attended my office regularly,
even when I had to come and live in Hankow, as there
was no house available on the Railway side. After
period, my visits to my office became less and leas as
I had absolutely nothing to de, and considered it
humiliating to pretend. All of this I put in my
monthly reports to the British and Chinese Corporation
copies going to the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank in
Shanghai, the Banque
the Banque de l'Indo-Chine also in 3hanghai,
the National City Bank in Peking and the Hongkong and
Shanghai local agent here.
I have lived in Hankew ever since April 1931 and
have even paid my own house rent, though entitled to
a free house at the Railway Terminus, Hsu Chia Pun.
When I go over to the Railway side, thereo is
only the common ferry service, with accommodation for
seolies, and nothing else.

Now about the line which is swoposed to open
about next May. I know nothing about the new
struction, as I have not been there, but it has been
very hurriedly done, and is sure to be far from
complete in many respects.
The open line from Wushang to Jhangsha is in a
deplorable state, as some 30% or say 200,000 sleepers
are quite retten, and many tens of thousands of deg
spikes are missing (the wails are spiked direct on to
the sleepers.)
The ballast is only about 50, of what is re-
quired, and the loses and relling steek ete are
